Market capitalization of Tata Group March 2024, by company

Tata Consultancy Services was the most valuable company of the Tata Group in terms of market capitalization as of June 2024. This was valued at over 13 trillion Indian rupees. Tata Motors ranked second on the list with around 3.5 trillion rupees during the same time. The conglomerate's Titan Company and steel business followed it.

Tata Group's beginnings

The Tata Group is one of India’s leading conglomerates with companies encompassing several business sectors like chemicals, engineering, IT, services, and energy. It was founded as a private trading firm in 1868 by J.N. Tata. Tata Iron and Steel, now Tata Steel, was the first company established under the conglomerate’s umbrella.  

Tata’s key mergers and acquisitions

Tata Group’s international acquisitions include iconic British brands such as Tetley, Jaguar, Land Rover from Ford, and Corus Group, a leading European steel producer, to name a few. Originally owned by Tata Sons, Air India, the national carrier airline of India run by the government was reacquired by Tata in 2022. Consolidation is another theme playing across Tata Group, along with mergers across companies. For example, seven metal companies merged with Tata Steel. The consumer business under Tata Chemicals merged into Tata Global to form Tata Consumer Products.
