In 2019, the shipment volume of low-malt beer in Japan amounted to around 615.2 thousand kiloliters, down from more than one million liters in 2011.
Low-malt beer, commonly referred to as happoshu, is a beer-like beverage with a malt content of less than 67 percent. As the Japanese liquor taxation system grades beer and beer-like alcoholic beverages according to the malt extract content, happoshu became a cheaper alternative to beverages classified as 'beer.'
