In the first quarter of 2023, the employment expectation index value of urban depositors in China was 52.3. Throughout the years 2018 and 2019, the employment expectation index value was over 50 which suggested that the majority of respondents in China had a positive outlook about their employment in the next quarter. Even though the index value dropped below 50 in the first quarter of 2020, it was only a drop of around five index points compared to the previous quarter. This indicated that the outbreak of COVID-19 had a comparably small impact on respondents' employment expectations in 2020.

A diffusion index indicates urban depositors income change in the observed quarter. The index is derived by calculating the proportions of respondents who answered that their employment expectation for the next quarter were "good", "normal", and "bad", assigning weights 1, 0.5, and 0 to them respectively. Finally, the average is calculated.
