Gas venting is the release of gases particularly carbon dioxide and methane into the Earth's atmosphere during extraction of crude oil and gas. In the United Kingdom, gas venting notably increased between 2016 and 2018, with some 95,500 metric tons of gas discharged in the latter year. 2018 also saw the generation of 26,300 metric tons of waste sludges, liquids and tank washings.
