Share of Italians interested in women's soccer in 2020

One out of four Italians indicated in a 2020 survey they were occasionally interested in women's soccer. Moreover, while six percent of respondents watched a match or read news about women’s football at least once a week, just three percent of interviewees did so every day. Overall, roughly six in ten respondents claimed not to be interested in women's soccer.

The profile of Italians interested in women’s soccer

In 2020, more male than female respondents were interested in women’s soccer. That was most likely because roughly one in two Italian women was not interested in the sport of soccer in general. When looking at the age of those who followed this sport, a survey revealed that people aged between 35 and 44 years were more interested in women’s soccer than other age groups as of 2020. Although seven in ten Italians aged under 35 were not following this sport, this age group recorded the highest share of people interested in women’s soccer on a weekly or daily basis.

Women’s soccer was quite popular in the Islands, and the South

In 2020, the highest share of Italians interested in women’s soccer related to the Islands (Sicily and Sardinia). About 40 percent of residents in this macro-region followed women’s football at least occasionally. However, it was the South that recorded the highest share of people who followed this sport daily or at least once a week.
