Online purchases surged during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in Taiwan. According to a survey on online shopping behavior in Taiwan conducted by Rakuten Insight in May 2020, about 61 percent of respondents who had increased online purchases during the epidemic said that they did that to avoid waiting in queues in the supermarket. The most in-demand items for online purchases were food and groceries and personal hygiene products such as toilet paper and masks.

The survey was conducted among
509 respondents aged 16 to 24 years,
1,780 respondents aged 25 to 34 years,
1,798 respondents aged 35 to 44 years,
702 respondents aged 45 to 54 years and
234 respondents aged 55 years and older.
