As of March 2021, it was calculated that among employers of state and local government workers, the management, professional, and related industry group received the lowest percent of total compensation costs for benefits, at 36 percent. The sales and office, and service industry groups were close in their distribution at 42.7 and 43.1 percent spent on benefits respectively.

The source provides the following information about the sample size: "Data for this reference period were collected from a probability sample of approximately 25,600 occupational observations selected from a sample of about 6,300 private industry establishments and approximately 7,800 occupational observations selected from a sample of about 1,400 state and local government establishments that provided data at the initial interview."
