Online purchases surged during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in China. According to a survey on Chinese online shopping behavior conducted by Rakuten Insight in May 2020, dry food items were purchased most frequently online among the respondents who had purchased food products more frequently online. Apart from food and groceries, the online demand for personal hygiene products such as toilet paper and masks also increased.

The question was asked among 454 female and 518 male online shoppers who had purchased food items more frequently during the pandemic.
