From January to October 2023, there were nearly 1,100 confirmed cases of Lassa fever in Nigeria and 7,600 suspected cases. The number of deaths reached 185.
Lassa fever is a hemorrhagic illness whose presence is known in several West African countries. The virus is particularly present in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Nigeria. According to the World Health Organization, 80 percent of the people affected by the Lassa virus have no symptoms. The transmission to humans occurs by exposure to food or items contaminated with urine or feces of infected rats (Mastomys).
