Shoprite Holdings' annual profit before income tax added up to approximately 6.3 billion South African rand (415 million U.S. dollars) in 2019, marking a significant decrease from the previous year. The South African Shoprite Group opened its first warehouse in 1979 and has since expanded to become one of the most successful retailers on the African continent and the Indian Ocean Islands.
