Approximately 31 percent of internet users surveyed in Chile stated that they wanted to shop online and have their purchases delivered at home during the COVID-19 outbreak, up from 18 percent before the pandemic started. Meanwhile, 12 percent of respondents said they would rather shop in physical stores during the pandemic, down from 31 percent before the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Chile recorded its first confirmed case of COVID-19 on March 3, 2020. Exactly 16 days later, Chilean president Sebastian Piñera declared a 90-day state of catastrophe giving the government extraordinary powers to restrict freedom of movement and try to assure food supply and basic services.
