Women in Nigeria living in rural areas were more likely to believe that female genital mutilation is required. According to the results of a study conducted in 2018, 20 percent of women in Nigeria had undergone female genital mutilation. For the majority of women, this occurred before the age of five.
Female genital mutilation is defined by the World Health Organization as any procedure that involves partial or total removal of the external genitalia and/or injury to the female genital organs for non-therapeutic reasons.
