Women in Nigeria who were circumcised were more likely to believe that female genital mutilation should continue compared to women were not circumcised. According to the results of a study conducted in 2018, 20 percent of women had undergone female genital mutilation. For the majority of women, this occurred before the age of five.
Female genital mutilation is defined by the World Health Organization as any procedure that involves partial or total removal of the external genitalia and/or injury to the female genital organs for non-therapeutic reasons.
