As of 2018, 2.6 percent of children in Nigeria had symptoms of acute respiratory infection in the two weeks preceding the survey. Data show that children in the North East were more likely affected by ARI, with 8.2 percent, while the lowest percentage was recorded in the South West.
Acute respiratory infection is among the most frequent causes of childhood morbidity and mortality in Nigeria as well as worldwide. Symptoms of ARI include short shallow breathings and difficulties in breathing. The most serious outcome of ARI is pneumonia.
