As of March 2020, around 95 percent of the surveyed catering enterprises in China had already experienced or expected a financial shortage in the next twelve months. The lack of cash flow was a reason for the financial shortfall. About 70 percent of the catering enterprises expected a year-on-year decrease of more than 70 percent in the first quarter of 2020.

The survey was conducted among respondents from 26 major cities and provinces. Among all respondents:
74 percent were private-owned, 11 percent were state-owned or state-funded, 5 percent were foreign or Hongkong-Macau-Taiwan funded, 10 percent were owned by other investors.
About 44 percent were sit-down restaurants, about 27 percent were fast-food.
About 58 percent had an annual income scale of fewer than 100 million yuan, 13 percent between 100 million and 250 million yuan, 16 percent more than one billion yuan.
