The total number of inpatient care discharges at public hospitals and private hospitals accredited with the national health service (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale - SSN) in Italy reached 6.5 million in 2018. As the graphic shows, the vast majority of the discharges occurred in public hospitals.

Data refer to: public hospitals (independent hospitals, hospitals of local health units, university independent hospitals and teaching hospitals (independent hospital integrated with the National Health System, independent hospital integrated with the university, private teaching hospital), research hospitals (public research hospitals, private research hospitals, foundation research hospitals), equalized or classified hospitals (private hospitals bound to the NHS by contract), hospitals as divisions of a regional, local hospital (Local health trust-owned hospital and research institute) and private hospitals (accredited to NHS).
