Universities are the most common type of higher education institution in Sweden. In the academic year 2021/22, there were 18 universities. With 11 institutions, university colleges accounted for the second most common type of higher education institution. Furthermore, there were five art schools and three schools of psychotherapy. In 2022, Stockholm University had the highest number of students in Sweden.
