From March 29 to April 7, 2020, nitrogen dioxide air pollution levels in Quito, Ecuador have decreased by 54 percent when compared to the first ten days of March, the highest reduction reported in the monitoring period. Approximately one month later, the city's pollution level showed a decrease of 34 percent in comparison to the baseline.
Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) is a gaseous air pollutant and has a direct connection to fossil fuel emissions. Changes in air pollution levels are related to a reduction in industrial activity and traffic circulation in urban areas, a consequence of lockdown measures enforced globally in an attempt to limit the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The first case of COVID-19 was reported in Ecuador on March 1, with a total lockdown implemented on March 22.
