Contrary to popular belief, European countries and France in particular, are not affected by deforestation. Since 1840, the French forest area had increased from 8.9 million hectares to 16.8 million hectares in 2018.
At the beginning of the 20th century, forests covered about 19 percent of metropolitan France. A century later, nearly a third of France was covered by forests.

The forest area considered here corresponds to the definition of forest in 1980. It included the area of production forests, other forests and copses. Poplar groves were not included.
Overseas departments are not included in the statistics.
