Cotton textile industry
The enormity of India's agricultural land has enabled it to be the largest producer of cotton in the world. Cotton accounted for over 12 million hectares of agricultural acreage in India. Historically, fabric industries established prominent mills in major cities like Kolkata and Mumbai that provided localized resources. Post-1920's, handlooms were established in various cities based on the availability of raw material, labor, transportation, and proximity to energy sources. The advent of hydroelectricity and government incentives favoring the industry has led the textile industry to be a prominent economic factor. The textile industry was one of the major components of economic income in India.
Market presence of Indian cotton fabrics
The industry generated huge revenues through the apparel market, which constituted mainly of yarns and fabrics made of cotton. The gradual decrease of non-cotton fabric production in recent years is also a testament to the aforementioned statement. India was among the leaders of woven cotton fabric exporters, with negligible amounts of import of the same. With the production of cotton fabrics and its exports on the rise, its contribution to the economy has been rendered indispensable.
