According to a survey conducted by GEM Partners in May 2020, more than half of the respondents in Japan stated that the time they spent on using video on demand (VOD) services increased after the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), while only 15 percent responded that the money they spent on the services increased. This trend could be observed also for other types of media. According to the source, the main factor leading to this tendency was that VOD and music streaming services are normally provided with a flat-rate system and that the respondents were trying to increase the value they gained for the money they paid.
