Healthcare facilities and various residential buildings were considered the most likely candidates for modular construction in the United States up until 2022. This according to respondents from design firms and contractors to a late 2019 survey, after they were asked about which building types would see the highest frequency of prefabrication and/or modular construction for the next three years. Prefab, or modular construction - sometimes also referred to as "tiny homes" - refers to the process off offsite construction, where a building gets constructed in a factory before being placed on location. Housing is the most well-known building type where this might occur, due to its construction speed and - especially - affordability. Note that the figures provided were from before COVID-19. Whether the prefab expectations in healthcare facilities has increased since the survey question was asked, was not yet clear in early 2021.
