Domestic commercial aircraft in the United States produced roughly 131 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) in 2022. U.S. commercial aviation emissions have increased annually since 2020, a year in which COVID-19-related travel restrictions caused emissions to plummet 33 percent year-on-year. Although emissions have rebounded since then, they have remained below pre-pandemic levels.
Greenhouse gas emissions from aviation in the United States from 1990 to 2022, by type
(in million metric tons of CO₂ equivalent)
Commercial aircraft emissions include those from jet fuel consumed by domestic operations of commercial aircraft (no bunkers). Other aircraft emissions are those from jet fuel and aviation gasoline consumption by general aviation and military aircraft.
