According to a survey conducted by Rakuten Insight in April 2020 on panic buying after the coronavirus outbreak, a majority of Japanese respondents aged 45 years and older stated that they did not stock up on items because they trusted that supermarkets would have enough supplies. Close to half of the respondents aged between 16 to 24 years old did not stockpile because they thought it was socially irresponsible. In the same survey, around 95 percent of all Japanese respondents indicated that they had not engaged in panic buying because of the coronavirus pandemic.
