Globally-averaged atmospheric methane increased in abundance by 19.88 parts per billion in 2023, compared to the previous year. The largest annual increase between 1985 and 2023 occurred in 2021, at just under 18 ppb. In recent years, global CH4 emissions have surpassed 11 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. Methane (CH4) is a greenhouse gas with a greater global warming potential than carbon dioxide, but has a shorter residence time in the atmosphere.
