Leading music and audio apps in Google Play in Italy 2020, by DAU

Which is the most popular music and audio app in the Google Play Store in Italy? The number of daily active users (DAU) can offer a hint. Daily active users are those who open an app and engage with it in a certain day. Data provided by Airnow show that the Spotify app was by far the one recording the highest figure. As of December 2020, the music streaming app registered over 526 thousand Android DAU. Shazam followed in the list, with roughly 327 thousand DAU, while SoundCloud, and Amazon Music ranked third and fourth, respectively.

Apart from the DAU, considering the number of downloads is another useful way to understand the popularity of an app. Between January and June 2020, the Spotify app’s monthly number of downloads on the Google Play Store increased overall. By contrast, the highest figure on the Apple App Store was recorded in January. In general, the number of downloads dropped remarkably during March and April, while Italy was on lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Monthly downloads of Shazam, and SoundCloud

Shazam is a mobile app that identifies songs, TV programs, and ads based on played music samples. As well as for Spotify, the total number of monthly downloads of Shazam peaked in June 2020, whereas it decreased in March and April. By contrast, the downloads of the SoundCloud app - only available on the Apple App Store – remained rather steady during the months of lockdown.
