The Men's Marathon has been a permanent fixture in the Summer Olympics since the inaugural games in 1896. To date, Ethiopian athletes have won the most gold medals, with four in total, while athletes from the United States have won the most overall medals, with eleven in total. Only three athletes have won back-to-back gold medals in this event, they were Ethiopia's Abebe Bikila in 1964 and 1968, East Germany's Waldemar Cierpinski, and current champion, Eliud Kipchoge, in 2016 and 2020. No athlete has ever been stripped of a medal won in this event.
