The Women's 10,000 meter event was first introduced as an Olympic event in the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul. Since 1988, Ethiopian athletes have been the most successful in this event, winning five golds, and 11 overall medals. Derartu Tulu and Tirunesh Dibaba are the most successful athletes in this event, both Ethiopians have two golds and one bronze medal each to their names. In 2017, Turkish runner Elvan Abeylegesse became the only athlete to have been stripped of a medal in this event, losing her 2008 silver medal due to doping violations.

This data was collected using the official Olympic.org site, as well as a spreadsheet from the Guardian that includes data from 1896-2008 (available here), 2012 and 2016 data was compared with that from Encyclopaedia Britannica, and several news outlets were used to update the table when medals were reassigned (i.e. for doping offenses).
