In 2023, Japan had the most general hospitals in the world among OECD countries, with 7,100 number of general hospitals. These exclude mental health and other specialized hospitals. Columbia, which had the most hospitals in the world, had relatively few general hospitals, just 1,777.

Source definition: General hospitals comprise licensed establishments primarily engaged in providing general diagnostic and medical treatment (both surgical and non-surgical) to inpatients with a wide variety of medical conditions. These establishments may provide other services, such as outpatient services, anatomical pathology services, diagnostic X-ray services, clinical laboratory services or operating room services for a variety of procedures, and/or pharmacy services, that are usually used by internal patients (intermediate outputs within the hospital treatment) but also by outside patients. General hospitals do not include mental health hospitals or other specialized hospitals.
