According to a survey by Rakuten Insight in April 2020, 89 percent of Thai respondents aged older than 55 years stated that they stocked up dry food items during the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey also explored reasons for making bulk purchases and it revealed that 45 percent of Thai respondents did so as they feared they might be quarantined soon and would not be able to buy groceries.

The survey was conducted among 6,632 female and 4,365 male respondents. Other surveyed countries included China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam.
