A total of 52 medals have been stripped from athletes relating to doping offences in athletic events at the Summer Olympics. Of these 52 medals, 27 (just over half) were taken from athletes competing in throwing or sprint relay events, with athletes in the Shot Put being stripped of eight medals in total. Athletes have been stripped of medals for a number of offenses in other sports (such as protesting at medal ceremonies or for breaching age restrictions), however all of the stripped medals relating to athletic events have been taken for doping-related offenses. Over two thirds of these medals were taken from female athletes.

The data was compiled using a variety of sources, such as these articles from the New York Times and the Huffington Post. Data for more recent tournaments was compiled from a number of official press releases from the International Olympic Committee and World Anti-Doping Agency, and various news outlets.
*Thes includes one gold in the 4x400m and one bronze in the 4x100m that were stripped from US athlete Marion Jones; the other members of these teams had their medals returned in 2010 and their records still stand.
