The majority of K-pop music fans in the United States began listening to K-pop after being told about it by someone they knew, with a 2019 survey revealing that 34.2 discovered the genre via a friend's recommendation. Just under 16 percent came across K-pop via social media, whilst 21.2 percent of survey respondents said that they had decided to listen to K-pop after first seeing Hallyu content such as Korean dramas or movies.
