Between 2008 and 2021, the energy intensity of metallurgical alumina refining dropped significantly from some 15,554 megajoules per metric ton of alumina in 2008 to around 10,545 megajoules per metric ton of alumina in 2021. Once alumina has been refined from its ore, it may be used to produce aluminum or as a product itself in electronics.
