Number of visitors in hotels in Russia 2010-2023
Nearly 66.2 million people stayed at hotels and similar accommodation establishments, such as hostels and motels, in Russia in 2023, marking a 15- percent increase from the previous year. In 2020, the figure sharply fell due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, travel restrictions, and other protective measures. During the period from 2010 to 2019, there was a steady growth in the number of persons staying at hotels in the country.
How is the hotel industry made up in Russia?
The number of hotels and similar accommodation establishments in Russia has increased since 2020. In 2021, 82 percent of the market in terms of room supply was distributed between five major international chains, namely Radisson Hotel Group, Accor Hotels, InterContinental Hotels Group, Marriott International, and Hilton Worldwide. Among them, Radisson Hotel Group occupied the largest share of the hotel room supply, at nearly one quarter. Most international operators suspended operations in Russia following the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Preferences of hotel visitors in Russia
In 2022, the number of visitors with private travel purposes exceeded business hotel guests in Russia. The majority of hotel guests reported to be either on vacation or on leisure and recreation trips. Both Russian and foreign travelers preferred short-term stays ranging between one and four nights. The most important criterion for choosing a hotel in the country was the location, with roughly a half of respondents saying that the hotel should be close to the sea, city center, or main attractions.
