* "Respondents were asked if they had ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that they had hypertension (or high blood pressure), and if so, if they had been told on two or more different visits. Respondents who answered affirmatively were asked if they had been told they had hypertension (or high blood pressure) during the past 12 months. Respondents who ever had hypertension were also asked if they were taking prescribed medication for high blood pressure. Respondents had to have been taking those medications or had hypertension or high blood pressure during the past 12 months to be classified as having diagnosed hypertension."
