New Delhi had an average air quality index (AQI) of 205 in 2023. By comparison, Bengaluru had an AQI of 54. An AQI between 201 and 300 is classified as unhealthy. While an AQI between 51 and 100 is regarded as acceptable, air pollution at this level can still lead to moderate health concerns.

Health effects of air pollution

In 2022, 80 percent of residents in Delhi reported that they, or a family member, suffered from multiple ailments due to toxic air. Air pollution is also attributable to millions of premature deaths every year around the world, with India one of the most affected countries.
