As of September 2023, there were a total of almost seven thousand power plants in Japan, of which approximately 4.34 thousand were solar power plants. Hydroelectric power plants followed, with more than 1.76 thousand facilities.

Towards Carbon-Neutrality

Japan is aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050, acknowledging that achieving this goal requires accelerated efforts, structural changes in energy and industry, and bold innovation investment. As a large amount of greenhouse gas emissions come from the energy sector, making efforts in this area is crucial. The power sector will undergo steady decarbonization through the practical use of decarbonized sources and innovation in thermal power generation, including hydrogen and ammonia-fired power, carbon storage, and carbon recycling. Furthermore, Japan prioritizes the increase of renewable energy and nuclear energy.

 International collaboration

Japan is taking part in international collaboration on renewable energy through the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) and promised financial and technological support to help other ASEAN countries accelerate decarbonization efforts.
Additionally, as part of the Asia Energy Transition Initiative (AETI), Japan pledged to invest ten billion U.S. dollars to support renewables in Asian countries. The initiative includes transferring domestically developed technologies like renewable energy grids and hydrogen across Asia. Collaboration efforts involve sharing knowledge on carbon capture technology through the Asia CCUS network and organizing events to accelerate progress in relevant sectors.
