In 2018, over one in ten Belgians took either sleeping pills or tranquilizers. From a regional perspective, the consumption of such medication was higher in Wallonia. Indeed, while it was estimated that under 10 percent of Belgians living in the Brussels-Capital Region consumed such drugs, the consumption reached 13 percent of the population in the French-speaking Walloon region.

The sampling of respondents was made online and not controlled scientifically. However, a logistic regression model based on age, gender, and the yearly population, was used to evaluate the consumption in the entire Belgian population. Furthermore, figures reflect the self-reported consumption of respondents, a margin of error is, therefore, to be considered.
