Mobile internet data traffic in Hungary 2019-2023
Over the observed period, there had been a significant rise in mobile internet data traffic in Hungary. In the second quarter of 2023, the volume of mobile data traffic reached 349 million gigabytes compared to 110 million in the third quarter of 2019.
Mobile networks
In 2022, most of the mobile internet traffic was transmitted through 4G networks, with 3G networks accounting for approximately two percent of the mobile data traffic. In April 2020, Telekom launched its 5G network with the two other significant telecommunication service providers, namely Telenor and Vodafone following in its footsteps over the next year. As 5G network coverage is still relatively low in the country, it comes as no surprise that between October and November 2020, only 42 percent of Hungarians were familiar with the concept of 5G networks.
Mobile internet providers
In the second quarter of 2022, the leading mobile internet provider was Magyar Telekom in Hungary, accounting for approximately 45 percent of the mobile internet traffic. Yettel, formerly known as Telenor accounted for another 34 percent of the market. Vodafone came third in the ranking with a market share of nearly 20 percent.
