Since the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown, there has been a noticeable reduction in the amount of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions throughout Europe. During April 2020, emissions in Europe dropped by almost 40 percent when compared to the same period the previous year. The largest drop in emissions was observed in Portugal, which had an NO2 emission reduction of 58 percent.

*Weather-corrected and population-weighted values.
The source adds the following information: "Differences between measured air pollutant concentrations and levels predicted based on weather conditions and previous years’ air quality data, showing the estimated impact of the lockdown measures. The analysis is done on the station-level, including all government monitoring stations, and population-weighted averages are calculated for each country".
