As of March 2020, the number of incorporated medical institutions in Tokyo Prefecture, Japan, amounted to around 6.5 thousand in total, followed by Osaka Prefecture with over 4.5 corporations. The medical corporations system in Japan began in 1950 and is recognized under the Medical Law enacted in 1948. With an approval of a prefectural governor, medical institutions, such as hospitals or medical, dental, and nursing care clinics, can incorporate themselves and operate as non-profit organizations.
