A study from December 2020 analyzed the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on the domestic tourist overnight stays in Italy from 2020 to 2024. It presented three alternative scenarios. According to the baseline scenario, Italy would experience a drop of 68 million domestic overnight stays in 2020 over the previous year. In 2022, the number of overnight stays would increase by seven million over the 2019 level.

The upside scenario, which considers a faster recovery, forecast a decrease of 57 million overnight stays in 2020. Finally, the downside scenario, supposing a slower recovery, estimated a decrease of 92 million overnight stays in 2020.
