Europeans preferred to use debit cards over mobile wallets for their in-store payments in 2019. This according to a survey held in six different countries, which asked consumers whether they used several payment methods in brick-and-mortar stores. Cash money ranked as the second-most popular offline payment method, with Apple Pay and Google Pay being used by roughly three percent of respondents. There is little comparable data in Europe when it comes to mobile payment methods or so-called e-wallets. Many agree they will grow in size and importance in Europe, but their exact market size as of 2019 or 2020 is difficult to establish.
