Smoking has been proven to be linked to many diseases, with respiratory difficulties and several types of cancers among them. As of 2014, about 260 thousand people died as direct consequence of cigarette smoking, most of them aged 65 years old or over. During the same period, the number of men reported to have died from smoking was significantly higher than that of women.
