According to a survey conducted in 2019, approximately 43 percent of architecture companies in Japan were either using or planning to use ArchiCAD as a software for projects that required building information modeling (BIM). BIM is a process that allows multi-disciplinary collaboration by using shared 3D models. ArchiCAD was followed by Revit, which was used or planned to be used by approximately one-third of the responding companies.
Building information modeling
BIM software can increase cost efficiency and productivity of building construction projects by allowing users to access a variety of shared information on 3D building models. In a recent survey, architectural companies in Japan showed positive attitudes towards BIM software, while major Japanese construction companies have already implemented BIM and CIM (Civil Information Modeling) software. The use of BIM and CIM software is a part of a push towards digital transformation in the construction sector.
Smart construction in Japan
The Japanese construction industry has been affected by increasing labor shortages. Labor productivity in the construction sector has continuously decreased in recent years. The Government of Japan has promoted a shift towards smart construction as a countermeasure against the lack of workforce in the industry. Smart construction makes use of new technologies like big data, artificial intelligence, and IoT to facilitate or automate construction work. Digitization in the construction industry can also enhance safety at construction sites. Over the past years, some of Japan’s largest general contractors like Obayashi Corporation and Shimizu Corporation, invested heavily in the development of new smart construction technology.
