The planned stimulus package reached a value of approximately 117 trillion Japanese yen ,more than twice the amount of the economic measures taken by the government in 2009 when the global economic recession occurred. Compared to the last version released on April 7, roughly nine trillion yen was added to the plan.
In April, the government declared a state of emergency for all 47 prefectures and insisted citizens to stay home and work from home until the end of May. It was, however, lifted in 39 prefectures on May 14 as the number of new infection cases went down. As of May 18 , 2020, there were a total of 16,305 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Japan.
