This statistic provides information on the number of controls carried out and fines issued in the context of containment linked to the coronavirus epidemic (COVID-19) in France between March 17 and April 1, 2020, in thousands. On April 1, after 16 days of confinement, the French police force carried out 5.8 million controls and issued 359,000 fines.
Lockdown in France
On March 17, given the scale of the epidemic raging in France, the French government made the decision to impose strict containment measures throughout France (including the overseas regions) until April 15. French people are thus prohibited from traveling, the only exceptions being going to work, making essential purchases, important health issues or family reasons as well as brief trips linked to each person's physical activity, excluding group sports. Outside of these conditions, citizens are requested to stay at home. In addition, since April 8, Parisians are prohibited from practicing running between 10 am and 7 pm. These strict measures are aimed at slowing down the spread of the virus among the population.
Penalties for breaching confinement
In order to enforce these rules, the police were mobilized throughout France. Any citizen encountered outside of his home without a certificate or a valid reason is liable to a fine of 135 euros which can be increased to 375 euros if it is not paid within 45 days. In the event of recurrence within 15 days, it will amount to 200 euros (and increase to 400 euros). In the event of a new violation of these rules within 30 days, the fine will be 3,700 euros and a prison sentence of up to six months.
