The return on equity (ROE) of U.S. banks has shown remarkable resilience, bouncing back to 11.14 percent in the second quarter of 2024 after experiencing significant fluctuations over the past two decades. This recent uptick represents a substantial recovery from the sharp decline during the financial crisis of 2007-2008 and the more recent setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
