Out of 6,566 new confirmed COVID-19 patients in Moscow on December 31, 2020, the majority were between 18 and 45 years old. In total, the number of COVID-19 cases in the Russian capital was nearly 828.6 thousand as of January 4, 2021. The average age of those infected with COVID-19 in Russia was measured at 47.9 years for women and 44.7 years for men as of April 2020.
COVID-19 case fatality and demographics
According to the World Health Organization, older people were most vulnerable to the disease, as case fatality was significantly higher in the age category above 60 years compared to others, as could be seen in the United States at the beginning of the pandemic. As for gender differences, as of end-March 2020, the share of lethal cases among male COVID-19 patients was higher in several countries, such as Denmark, Italy, and Germany.
The second wave of COVID-19 in Moscow
The increase in COVID-19 cases in the Russian capital slowed down in September 2020. On the last day of that month, 2.3 thousand new cases were recorded. Starting from October, the figures increased sharply, and in end-November, the daily increase reached nearly eight thousand cases. Even though Russia did not impose a lockdown as strict as in spring 2020, several measures were introduced in Moscow, including the prohibition for bars and restaurants to operate from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m. and the self-isolation regime for residents above 65 years old.
