Green bonds were created as an instrument to earmark finance for climate and environmental projects. While a lot of green bonds deals are done over the counter, green bonds are also listed on the stock exchange. In 2023, the top issuer of green bonds on the Euronext stock exchange was the European Investment Bank, with green bonds worth nearly 46 billion U.S. dollars. The proceeds will be allocated to green or climate-related expenditures undertaken by the government.
